Army deserter seeks sanctuary in Vancouver church

We’ve periodically discussed the phenomenon of U.S. military deserters fleeing to Canada, which has recently resulted in the counter-trend of U.S. military deserters being deported from Canada.  Here’s an article about one Army deserter who was denied refugee status in Canada and ordered to leave by 11 September.  Instead, he has received sanctuary from a church in Vancouver, where he is now living in an apartment.

The soldier, Rodney Watson, offers an exceptionally weak justification for his desertion:

He said an army recruiter had promised him a job as a cook but he ended up checking vehicles for car bombs. Each day, he wondered: “Is this the day I’m going to get blown up?” he said.

Maybe the church will at least make him cook for his keep?

Watson? Watson?! That guy owes me money!

He is remarkably frank about his cowardice.

So he’s not in Canada, and seeking sanctuary in a church out of some high-minded objection to war – he’s just a coward.

Anon 1206, it’s (almost) from Bill Murray in Stripes.
