Courts-Martial News

Interesting NYT editorial on military commissions, here.  The stuff about Commissions Chief Defense Counsel COL Colwelll objecting to new defense counsel rules is new to me–but I live in a cave when it comes to commissions.

A freshman at the Naval Academy, and track team member, is charged with rape and will face an Art. 32 hearing, see coverage here and here.

From our truth is stranger than fiction department comes this recruiting scam courtesy of the Arizona Republic:

They didn’t have Army haircuts. Their boots didn’t shine. And their uniforms didn’t look right.

U.S. Army veteran  . . . [and] Walnut city councilman [Joaquin Lim] stopped one of the recruits and asked to see his military ID.

“There were actually typos on the ID card,” Lim said. “Right away, I knew something was wrong.”

Those suspicions came into the spotlight Tuesday when authorities arrested the so-called supreme commander of the U.S. Army/Military Special Forces Reserve unit and charged him with duping Chinese immigrants into thinking they had truly enlisted in the American armed forces.

Prosecutors say Yupeng Deng, 51, recruited 100 other Chinese immigrants from as far away as Northern California and even Georgia to enlist in his Southern California group – at the cost of several hundred dollars – to help improve their chances of obtaining green cards and U.S. citizenship.

Deng, who also goes by the name David, is charged with 13 counts of obtaining money, labor or property under false pretenses, manufacturing and selling phony identification documents and using a counterfeit seal. He is set to be arraigned May 2.

If I were the “supreme commander” of something, I don’t think I’d be out doing my own recruiting. I’d have people to do that for me!

  2. N says:

Maybe he was the supreme commander of recruiting?

  3. Snuffy says:

But, … He told me I was in the Army! I guess I better talk to the Supreme Commander again, but he wont answer any message traffic on the watch/wrist radio transimitter he sold me.

  4. John O'Connor says:

CAAF would probably find that this was sufficient to render the defrauded Chinese immigrants subject to court-martial jurisdiction. ;-)

  5. Stewie says:

Hmmm…my boots don’t shine and my pajama ACUs don’t “look right” either.

Could it be that I’m not really in the Army either?!

    (I do have the haircut).

In other courts-martial news, PFC Manning is to be transferred from MCB Quantico Brig to USDB Leavenworth.
