This Memorial Day weekend, I’ll reflect on the service and sacrifice of those judge advocates and members of the military’s legal community who bravely went into harm’s way and made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

The Army JAG School’s website has a Fallen Heroes page.  Here are the members of the Army JAG Corps who have been killed in the line of duty since 11 September 2001:

Chief Warrant Officer Five Sharon Swartworth

Sergeant Major Cornell W. Gilmore

Sergeant Michael M. Merila

Corporal Sascha Struble

Major Michael Martinez

Corporal Coty J. Phelps

I don’t believe any uniformed judge advocate or member of the legal community from any service other than the Army has been killed in the line of duty since 9-11, but if I’m wrong about that, please let me know.

This Memorial Day weekend, I’ll also reflect on the bravery and sacrifice of DEA Special Agent Mike Weston — a former active duty Marine judge advocate who was killed in a helicopter crash while returning from a counternarcotics mission in Afghanistan on 26 October 2009.

And I’ll also be remembering Code 45 alumna Mari-Rae Sopper, who was in the plane that terrorists flew into the Pentagon on 11 September 2001.

Thanks Dwight. I had the privilege of working with Mari-Rae on a case – it’s hard to believe it’s been almost 10 years since her death. A salute to her and the other Fallen Heroes!
