5th Stryer Brigade Retrospective Coverage
Lots of 5th Stryker Brigade murder trial coverage this AM. The reliable Tacoma News-Tribune has this story and a helpful timeline for those trying to dissect the case, here. The pieces, here and here by Adam Ashton of the TNT are a nice retrospective on things to date. SSGT Calvin Gibbs’ case is set for trial Oct. 28, docket here. An Art. 39a in the SPC Michael Wagnon case is currently on the docket for Nov. 7.
Congress to Investigate Alleged VA Loan Fraud
In our Justice for Military news section, the Post’s political blog notes, here, that Rep. Jeff Miller, chairman of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, “ordered his staff to begin an investigation Friday into allegations that some of the nation’s largest lending institutions have cheated veterans and taxpayers out of hundreds of millions of dollars by charging illegal fees in home refinancing loans.” The allegations arise out a recently unsealed whistleblower suit alleging fraud by various VA mortgage lenders in the way they charged attorneys fees to refinancers. DOJ has declined to intervene in the suit at this point.
Gorkha Keeps Job After Taliban Loses Head
In international military justice, here, well the story’s first two sentences say it all, “A [Gorkha] under investigation for beheading a Taliban gunman has been allowed back on normal duty. The Nepalese soldier faced court martial after he returned to base with the enemy fighter’s head in a bag and presented it to senior officers.”
